Building Consultant | Building & Remedial Consultancy | Sydney

About the Business

Our client is an established Sydney-based building and construction consultancy with approximately 20 staff, the majority of whom work within the building consultancy team.

The business provides a broad range of consultancy services across building defects, remedial construction, expert witness, litigation support, project management and cost consultancy.

A significant proportion of their work is within the Class 2 residential sector, working across complex building defects, construction disputes and remedial projects. However, the wider business has experience across residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure environments.

Their services span building compliance and defect inspections, expert witness services, contractual claims and dispute management, cost reporting and assessments, remedial works and project management.

Approximately 60% of the consultancy's current workload relates to litigation and dispute work, providing excellent exposure for someone interested in developing their technical reporting, forensic investigation and expert witness experience.

The Opportunity

Due to continued growth, they're looking to appoint an experienced Building Consultant to join the Sydney team.

You’ll work across a diverse portfolio of projects, with approximately 90% of the current workload involving Class 2 residential buildings.

Projects can involve investigating building defects, preparing technical reports, assisting with expert witness matters and developing remedial solutions before progressing through design coordination, tendering and project delivery.

This provides an opportunity to follow projects considerably further than simply completing an inspection and issuing a report.

Depending on the project, you’ll have exposure to the full process from initial investigation and assessment through design coordination, scope preparation, tendering, contractor appointment, remedial works and final completion.

You’ll work alongside experienced Building Consultants and Directors while progressively taking greater ownership of your own projects and client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertaking building inspections and defect investigations
  • Identifying and documenting building defects and potential causes
  • Preparing detailed technical reports and recommendations
  • Assisting with expert witness reports, litigation and construction dispute matters
  • Developing scopes of work and remedial strategies
  • Coordinating consultants and technical design information
  • Preparing tender documentation and assisting with contractor procurement
  • Managing remedial projects through construction and completion
  • Liaising with owners corporations, strata managers, lawyers, contractors and other consultants
  • Monitoring remedial works for quality and compliance
  • Assisting with cost assessments and project-related commercial matters where required
  • Managing project documentation, reporting and client communication

About You

We’re looking for someone who combines good technical capability with strong communication skills and a genuine willingness to continue developing within building consultancy.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Minimum 3+ years' experience as a Building Consultant in the Australian market
  • A relevant tertiary degree in Building Surveying, Construction Management, Engineering, Quantity Surveying or a related discipline
  • Previous building consultancy, defects or remedial experience highly regarded
  • Understanding of building construction, defects and remedial methodologies
  • Strong technical report writing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Confident communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Professional and proactive approach
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team

Previous exposure to Class 2 buildings, expert witness matters, litigation or remedial project management would be particularly advantageous. This role would suit an RICS Building Surveyor looking to transition into the local market.

Culture & Career Development

Technical capability is important, but personality and cultural fit are equally important to this business.

They’re looking for someone who enjoys being part of a team, communicates well and can have a laugh while maintaining a professional approach with clients.

With approximately 20 people in the business, you’ll have direct exposure to experienced senior consultants and Directors rather than becoming another number within a large corporate environment.

For someone ambitious, there is also the opportunity to broaden your experience across different areas of building consultancy and develop greater responsibility as the business continues to grow.

The business may also consider sponsorship for the right candidate with previous local experience.

What’s in it for you?

  • Diverse exposure across building consultancy, remedial and litigation work
  • Significant exposure to complex Class 2 building projects
  • Opportunity to develop expert witness and dispute experience
  • Follow projects from investigation through to remedial delivery
  • Work directly alongside experienced senior consultants and Directors
  • Friendly, down-to-earth and collaborative team
  • Genuine opportunity to broaden your technical and client-facing experience
  • Long-term career development within a growing consultancy
  • Sponsorship potentially available for suitable candidates
