Brisbane Full-Time On-site

We're seeking competent, personable skippers with practical Brisbane River experience. You'll command Maiwar and work closely with the deckhand/hosts to deliver safe, enjoyable cruises. This is a practical crew role involving vessel handling, passenger service, preparation, cleaning and routine vessel care. Navigation, lookout and passenger safety always take priority over commentary and hospitality duties.

Key responsibilities

  • Safely command and manoeuvre the vessel, including departures, berthing and passenger transfers.
  • Plan cruises around tides, currents, weather, river traffic and operating restrictions.
  • Complete pre-departure checks, passenger counts, safety briefings and required records.
  • Lead the crew and follow Maiwar's safety management system and emergency procedures.
  • Make sound safety decisions, including delaying, changing or cancelling operations when necessary, and communicate changes promptly.
  • Welcome guests and support engaging commentary when safe to do so.
  • Coordinate with the crew and bookings team on cruise timings, catering and charter requirements.
  • Monitor outboards and vessel systems, report defects and undertake routine checks and care within your competence.
  • Assist with cleaning, including toilets, restocking, vessel preparation and turnaround between cruises.
  • Undertake vessel positioning between Rivergate Marina and departure pontoons as rostered.

About you

  • Current Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal certificate or higher, with permissions and conditions suitable for Maiwar and the assigned operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Brisbane River traffic, tides, currents and berthing conditions.
  • Commercial passenger-vessel experience and confident vessel handling.
  • Practical sailing-catamaran competence for assignment to sailing operations.
  • Current First Aid, CPR and an appropriate marine radio qualification.
  • Strong safety awareness, communication, teamwork and customer service skills.
  • Ability to perform the practical duties safely, with reasonable adjustments where required.
  • Australian work rights and the required roster availability.
  • Availability for evening, weekend and public holiday work is essential, alongside daytime shifts.
