The position analyses infrastructure requirements, designs and implements solutions, maintains and optimises systems and networks, ensures compliance with Department of Education (DE) technical and cyber security standards. The position exercises independent technical judgement and is accountable for the reliability and security of systems that the whole college depends on.

Key responsibilities

  • Network design, implementation and administration: Plan, design, install, configure and maintain the college network infrastructure, including core and edge switching, routing, VLAN segmentation, wireless, firewall, internet and remote-access services, in line with DE technical standards. Research, evaluate and recommend network hardware, software and services; prepare specifications for procurement and coordinate structured cabling, fibre and vendor works. Monitor network performance, capacity and availability; analyse traffic and fault data; tune and optimise to meet service requirements. Maintain segregated networks for security systems, building services, guest and BYOD access in accordance with DE security requirements. Maintain accurate network documentation, IP address schemas, topology diagrams and configuration backups.
  • Server, systems and cloud administration: Install, configure, administer and maintain on-premises and cloud server environments, including Windows Server roles (Active Directory, Group Policy, DHCP, DNS, file and print), virtualisation platforms, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra ID and Google Workspace. Design and administer identity and access management, including user lifecycle processes, authentication, authorisation and integration with DE identity services. Manage operating system and application patching, updates, capacity planning, performance monitoring and licensing across servers and cloud services. Develop and maintain system standards, build procedures, configuration baselines and change records.
  • Endpoint and device management: Design, implement and administer device-management platforms (Microsoft Intune, Apple School Manager, Google Admin) for Windows, Apple and ChromeOS fleets, including enrolment, configuration profiles, compliance policies and application deployment. Own the device lifecycle: standards, procurement input, imaging and provisioning, deployment, refresh planning and secure disposal in line with DE asset-management policy.
  • Cyber security, backup and business continuity: Implement, maintain and monitor security controls across network, server, identity and endpoint layers in accordance with DE cyber security policy; manage endpoint protection and respond to security incidents and alerts. Design, administer and test backup and disaster-recovery systems; maintain recovery documentation and perform periodic restore testing. Conduct system hardening, vulnerability remediation, access reviews and log auditing; maintain the college ICT risk register and support DE security audits and compliance reporting.
  • Technical escalation, advice and team leadership: Act as the senior technical escalation point for complex network, server, identity, device-management and security faults; diagnose and resolve issues that cannot be resolved at first level. Provide technical supervision, coaching and work allocation to the ICT Technician(s); develop knowledge-base articles, standard operating procedures and best-practice guides. Provide expert technical advice to Principal class and Business Manager on infrastructure strategy, investment, procurement and risk; contribute to ICT planning and present to leadership and staff as required. Lead or contribute to infrastructure projects from scoping through implementation, documentation and handover, applying change-management practice. Support DE-approved platforms and the whole-college ICT service, including during peak periods such as term start and examinations.
