Ready to revolutionise education and spark young minds? Are you a teacher who thrives outside the traditional box and knows that true learning rarely happens in black and white? Do you dream of an educational environment where "one size fits all" is a forgotten phrase, and you are empowered to operate in the grey?
If you are a highly flexible, trauma-informed educator who believes every student deserves a unique path to success—especially when the mainstream system hasn't worked for them—then you might just be the superhero we're looking for!
Jabiru Community College (JCC) in Zillmere, North Brisbane, isn't your average school. We are a vibrant, small senior secondary special assistance school that champions around 100 incredible young people in Years 10-12. These are students who have disconnected from mainstream education, and we are here to offer them a fresh, empowering start.
Our secret sauce? We are not slaves to the Australian Curriculum. Instead of forcing students through rigid lessons, we embrace highly individualised learning where every student crafts their own timetable, dives into what truly lights them up, and we backwards-map those authentic experiences to the curriculum.
We are on an exciting journey to embrace the Big Picture Learning model, and we need passionate educators to help us make it happen. Imagine guiding a small class of around 17 students, partnered with the fantastic support of a dedicated youth worker, empowering them to explore their unique learning journeys. We hold high expectations for every single student because we know they are capable of amazing things once they find their spark.
Who You Are:
- A Trauma-Informed Connector: You know fundamentally that young people cannot learn unless they feel safe and connected. You prioritise building deep, trusting relationships first, knowing that learning and confidence will naturally flow out of that foundation.
- A Master of the "Grey": You are highly flexible and deeply comfortable operating in the grey. You understand that learning is not black and white at our school, and you adapt swiftly and calmly to the changing needs of your students on any given day.
- A Backwards-Mapping Wizard: You are not constrained by rigid curriculum plans. You facilitate incredible opportunities for young people to deeply explore their interests, and you have the pedagogical skill to backwards-map their learning to the curriculum.
- An Innovator at Heart: You are excited by a radically different learning model—one that helps young people truly flourish, build resilience, and become their best selves outside the mainstream grind.
- A Diversity Champion: You celebrate the rich tapestry of backgrounds, abilities, and identities our students bring to the table.
- A Registered Queensland Teacher (or soon to be!): Whether you are fully QCT registered or jumping through the final hoops to become registered, we want to hear from you! New graduates who are ready to embrace flexible, student-centered learning are absolutely welcome.
While an understanding of the Big Picture Learning model is a bonus, it is definitely not a deal-breaker. What matters most is your passion, your unshakeable commitment to trauma-informed care, and your readiness to redefine what school can be. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply – your perspectives and experiences are vital to our community.
Ready to make a real difference and be part of something special? Come join the JCC crew for 2027! This is a permanent, ongoing position! JCC is committed to child safety and wellbeing. We promote cultural safety, inclusion and empowerment, and expect all staff to uphold these values. This role will require a National Police Check before commencement.
