Help strengthen enterprise data governance and build the foundations for AI-enabled decision-making.

Canberra Consulting is seeking an experienced Senior Data Governance Analyst to support a major Federal Government agency’s Data Foundations for AI project. This role will help improve the governance, quality and visibility of enterprise data assets, supporting their appropriate use in analytics, automation and AI-enabled decision-making. Working across business and technical teams, you will analyse data assets, translate business needs into practical requirements, establish data quality rules and support the rollout of enterprise data governance capabilities. These include metadata management, data lineage, data quality and workflow management. This is a hands-on opportunity suited to someone who combines strong analytical skills with practical experience in data governance platforms and stakeholder engagement.

What you will do:

  • Analyse data assets and operational systems to identify data quality, metadata and governance improvement opportunities.
  • Engage stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into data governance and platform requirements.
  • Develop, implement and communicate data quality rules, business rules and relevant security specifications.
  • Support the rollout and ongoing improvement of metadata management, data lineage, data quality and workflow capabilities.
  • Use SQL, Python or similar tools to query, assess and integrate data from multiple sources.
  • Assess platform capabilities and limitations, recommending improvements aligned with governance frameworks and business needs.
  • Contribute to project planning, requirements documentation, testing, implementation and continuous improvement.
  • Prepare reports, briefings, requirements artefacts and business process documentation for senior stakeholders.
  • Support user guidance, training and adoption of new data capabilities.
  • Manage competing priorities and, where required, guide staff and coordinate activities.

What you will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in data governance and management, including metadata, data quality, data lineage and data stewardship.
  • Experience with enterprise data governance platforms, such as Collibra, Informatica, IBM Knowledge Catalogue or similar.
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python or comparable querying tools to interrogate and analyse data across enterprise platforms.
  • Experience in gathering business requirements and translating them into practical governance or platform solutions.
  • Ability to assess data quality, integrity and fitness for purpose, including implementing appropriate quality controls.
  • Knowledge of data access, classification, collection, editing, integration and reuse, with an understanding of security, privacy and ethical considerations.
  • Experience supporting project delivery through planning, documentation, testing and implementation.
  • Ability to build productive relationships with business and technical stakeholders.
  • Skill in preparing clear, evidence-based recommendations and communicating complex information to different audiences.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel for analysis, reporting, tracking and documentation.
  • Knowledge of data governance frameworks, metadata standards, data lifecycle management and relevant legislation or policy settings will be highly regarded.
  • Experience supporting change management, training or platform adoption would also be valuable.

Contract and location:

  • Extensions: Extension options up to a maximum of 24 months
  • Locations: Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart, Cairns or Robina
  • Working arrangements: Onsite for the first six weeks unless otherwise negotiated. Hybrid arrangements may then be considered, subject to business requirements.
  • Candidates must reside within reasonable travelling distance of their nominated office and be available to attend onsite when required.
