C&R Consulting Pty Ltd (C&R) is an established environmental consultancy with more than 20 years of experience delivering innovative, practical, and sustainable solutions to complex environmental challenges throughout northern Australia. Our multidisciplinary team specialises in environmental monitoring, assessment, and management, with expertise spanning aquatic ecology, surface water, groundwater, geochemistry, geomorphology, soils, botany and environmental approvals. Our work takes us across diverse and often remote tropical environments, supporting projects across the resources, infrastructure, agricultural, and government sectors.
We are seeking a practically minded Environmental Scientist to join our Townsville-based team in a full-time, permanent position. This opportunity is particularly suited to an early-career scientist looking to broaden their experience across environmental disciplines while developing their technical capabilities and professional interests. Working directly alongside experienced senior and principal scientists, you will gain exposure to a diverse range of environmental investigations, monitoring programs, and assessments.
As an Environmental Scientist, you will work collaboratively within our multidisciplinary team to support the delivery of environmental monitoring and assessment programs across northern Australia.
Key responsibilities:
- Assisting with the planning and delivery of environmental monitoring programs and field investigations across a range of scientific disciplines.
- Undertaking field sampling, environmental measurements, and observations in accordance with established scientific methods and regulatory requirements.
- Collecting, managing, analysing, and interpreting environmental data under the guidance of experienced scientists.
- Contributing to the preparation of scientific reports, environmental assessments, and regulatory documentation.
- Developing an understanding of environmental processes and the relationships between groundwater, surface water, aquatic ecosystems, and other environmental systems.
- Working collaboratively with specialists across different disciplines to support integrated environmental investigations.
- Maintaining field equipment, following established safety procedures, and contributing to a positive and supportive team culture.
About you:
We are looking for a self-motivated, curious, and practically minded scientist who enjoys learning, problem-solving, and working in diverse environments. You will be comfortable undertaking fieldwork in remote locations, keen to develop your technical capabilities, and interested in gaining exposure to different areas of environmental science.
You will ideally have:
- A tertiary qualification in environmental science, hydrogeology, geology, ecology, or a related discipline.
- Typically two to four years of relevant professional experience, although applicants with demonstrated practical capabilities and a willingness to develop their skills are encouraged to apply.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, organisational, and time management skills.
- Experience with environmental monitoring equipment, field sampling techniques, and environmental data management, or a demonstrated aptitude for developing these skills.
- Good computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel, with GIS experience highly desirable.
- A basic understanding of environmental legislation and regulatory processes, preferably within Queensland and/or under Commonwealth legislation.
- A current manual driver's licence and confidence undertaking remote travel and off-road/4WD driving.
- Willingness to undertake planned fieldwork in remote locations, generally for periods of less than 10 days per trip.
- Unrestricted working rights in Australia.
- Ability to meet relevant site-specific medical and safety requirements, including a Coal Mine Workers' Health Assessment where applicable.
At C&R, we believe that developing capable environmental scientists starts with providing opportunities to explore, learn, and understand the relationships between different scientific disciplines. Our collaborative team structure means you will work directly with experienced specialists, contribute to a diverse range of projects, and gain exposure to technical disciplines beyond your immediate area of expertise.
As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to:
- Explore different scientific disciplines: Gain practical experience across groundwater, surface water, aquatic ecology, geochemistry, and other environmental specialties to help identify your professional interests and strengths.
- Learn directly from experienced specialists: Work alongside senior and principal scientists who provide mentoring, technical guidance, and opportunities to develop your scientific judgement.
- Experience unique environments: Undertake fieldwork across remote and ecologically diverse regions of northern Australia that few people have the opportunity to experience.
- Develop your technical capabilities: Build experience in field investigations, data analysis, scientific interpretation, and reporting through involvement in diverse environmental projects.
- Shape your career direction: Explore your technical interests, develop your strengths, and pursue opportunities for specialisation or broader multidisciplinary roles as your experience grows.
- Be part of a collaborative team: Work in a supportive environment where knowledge sharing, teamwork, and professional development are valued.
- Enjoy flexibility and balance: Benefit from flexible working arrangements and a workplace that values both professional achievement and personal wellbeing.
- Be recognised for your contribution: Receive competitive remuneration commensurate with your qualifications, skills, and experience.
