If you’re good at understanding complicated things, talking to clients and asking good questions, you could be very good at this job - even if you’ve never worked in R&D Tax before. We’re hiring a full-time Consultant / Senior Consultant in Melbourne.

A lot of R&D Tax consulting is really investigative work. You sit down with founders, engineers, developers and technical teams and work out what they were actually trying to build. What didn’t they know at the start? Why wasn’t the answer obvious? What did they try? What failed? What changed? Then you apply the R&D Tax framework and work out what matters for the claim. We can teach you the framework. The harder thing to teach is whether you can understand something technical quickly, ask the next good question and communicate naturally with a client.

What makes the role different:

  • You’ll have people helping with finance, technical writing, research, uploading and administration.
  • You’ll still review things, write when it makes sense and get into the detail when your judgement is needed.
  • More of your time should go into interviewing founders and technical teams; understanding what they’re actually building; asking better follow-up questions; making judgement calls; managing client relationships; reviewing the work of the team around you; and building relationships with accountants and referral partners.
  • We also use AI and structured systems to reduce lower‑value work and improve the quality of delivery.

Who this could suit:

  • You might already work in R&D Tax.
  • Or you might come from consulting; accounting; engineering; science; software or technology; or another technical or analytical role.
  • For the Consultant role, previous R&D Tax experience is not required.
  • What matters more is whether you can get your head around complicated things, communicate clearly, ask good questions and use judgement.
  • If you already have strong R&D Tax experience and can independently lead client work, we may consider you at Senior Consultant level.

This should be a step forward. This isn’t just a technical production role. As you develop, you’ll take on more client ownership, lead interviews, review support staff and build relationships with clients and accountants. You’ll also get exposure to the commercial side of a specialist consultancy — referrals, networking, sales, personal branding and marketing.

For a Consultant, the natural progression is towards Senior Consultant. For an experienced Senior Consultant, there is a path towards Tax Manager‑level responsibility as the team grows.

Package: For Consultant-level candidates, we expect the package to be around $100,000–$110,000 total package, depending on experience. Higher packages may be available for genuinely experienced R&D Tax candidates coming in at Senior Consultant level.

Why on‑site? This is an on‑site Melbourne role. A lot of the learning happens in the side conversations - sitting in on calls, asking somebody across the room how they would handle something and seeing how other people approach clients. We want a team that actually works together. If you want to work remotely most of the week, this probably isn’t the right role.

About Bulletpoint: Bulletpoint has specialised in the Australian R&D Tax Incentive since 2011 and has worked with more than 500 Australian companies across software, engineering, manufacturing and other technical industries. We talk directly to the people doing the work, ask the questions and do the heavy lifting rather than sending clients giant templates and asking them to write their own claim. We’re growing, and there is room for strong people to take on more responsibility as the firm grows.
