Company Overview: BLACKROC is partnering with a large Australian Government agency to recruit an EL1 Data Modeller.
Role Purpose: You’ll lead enterprise data modelling across several projects that support the agency’s modern data platform and analytics capability. You’ll work with architects, engineers, analysts and business stakeholders. Your job is to turn complex business needs into governed, reusable semantic models, so the whole organisation reports from one trusted version of its numbers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and governance of enterprise semantic models, certified datasets, KPIs and business metrics
- Run requirements sessions with business stakeholders and data architects, and translate the results into logical, dimensional and semantic data models
- Design enterprise-grade dimensional models using star schema principles: facts, dimensions, hierarchies and the right level of detail (grain)
- Build and optimise presentation-layer tables, views and SQL transformations in Snowflake
- Develop reusable, scalable semantic models in Power BI, including measures, KPIs and business logic
- Tune model performance across relationships, cardinality, filter propagation and query performance
- Partner with data engineering on source data requirements and modelling challenges
- Enable reporting teams to use governed models instead of duplicating logic in each report
Required Skills & Experience:
- Extensive experience leading enterprise data modelling in large, complex environments, including naming conventions, metadata, documentation and governance standards
- Proven ability to translate business requirements into logical, physical and semantic models
- Strong hands‑on Snowflake experience: presentation‑layer design, complex SQL, query optimisation and validating models against business requirements
- Expertise in ER modelling, dimensional modelling and normalisation, using ERwin or an equivalent tool
- Extensive experience building scalable semantic models for self‑service BI in Power BI or similar
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and workshop facilitation skills, including presenting to senior stakeholders
- Australian citizenship and the ability to obtain a Negative Vetting Level 1 clearance
Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience with cloud data platforms such as AWS, Databricks, MS Fabric or Redshift
- Experience supporting enterprise architecture, data strategy or large‑scale data transformation programs
- Knowledge of data governance, metadata management, master data management and data quality frameworks
- Previous Australian Government or highly regulated industry experience
