Love nursing, but looking for something beyond the clinic? Sometimes the most important health conversations happen over a cuppa at a Men's Shed, at a community event, or with someone who hasn't been to the doctor in years. At the Australian Men's Shed Association (AMSA), we're looking for an experienced Registered Nurse with mental health expertise to use their clinical knowledge and skills in a different way, helping men better understand their health and wellbeing and encouraging them to take action before small concerns become bigger problems.

We support over 1,300 Men's & Community Sheds across Australia, helping men stay connected, active and well. We're continuing to build our health promotion work and looking for someone who can help us take practical health information, screening and support directly into communities.

The Community Health & Wellbeing Nurse position offers an opportunity to use your nursing skills outside a traditional clinical environment, with a focus on prevention and improving longer-term health outcomes. You'll be:

  • Coordinating and delivering physical and mental health checks through our Spanner in the Works? program
  • Having practical conversations with men about their health, wellbeing and risk factors
  • Helping participants understand their results and connect with appropriate health services when follow-up is needed
  • Delivering health education and wellbeing activities in Men's Sheds and other community settings
  • Developing connections with health services and referral pathways, particularly in regional and rural communities
  • Providing clinical input into AMSA's health promotion programs, resources and campaigns
  • Sharing insights from your work in communities to help improve our programs and approaches

Your work will take you to different parts of Australia, meeting people from all walks of life. Some days you'll be delivering health checks from our RV, others you'll be visiting Sheds or working with the team on program planning, clinical content and resources. We're a health promotion organisation, not a clinical health service. This role is about prevention, early identification, education and encouraging appropriate follow-up, rather than diagnosis or ongoing treatment.

The details:

  • Permanent part-time, 4 days per week (30 hours)
  • Salary of $86,000 per annum ($107,500 full-time equivalent), plus superannuation and generous not-for-profit salary packaging benefits
  • Based in Newcastle, NSW, with remote arrangements considered for candidates living within reasonable proximity to a well-connected domestic airport
  • Regular domestic travel (including to regional and rural communities), with a daily travel allowance when you're on the road
  • Flexible working arrangements and generous time off in lieu provisions
  • Some health check activities will be delivered from our mobile health promotion RV, a large Jayco vehicle that can be driven on a standard licence

We're looking for an experienced Registered Nurse who enjoys working with people and understands that building trust is often the first step towards improving someone's health. You'll need sound clinical knowledge and judgement, but also the ability to communicate naturally with people who may not be comfortable talking about their health or engaging with traditional health services. You'll bring:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
  • Qualifications and/or substantial professional experience in mental health nursing
  • Experience in preventive health screening, health assessments or related clinical work
  • Confidence in recognising and responding appropriately to physical and mental health concerns, including distress
  • A good understanding of primary care, mental health and community health services and referral pathways
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate health information in clear, everyday language
  • A culturally safe, respectful and inclusive approach to working with diverse communities
  • The ability to work independently while maintaining clinical safety and professional standards
  • A willingness to travel across Australia and work in different community settings
  • A current Australian driver's licence and the confidence to safely drive and manoeuvre a large vehicle, including our Jayco RV
  • Experience in men's health, rural health, community nursing or community-based health promotion would be an advantage, as would experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and other communities facing barriers to healthcare.

You don't need to know everything (or anything!) about Men's Sheds when you start. What matters is that you're interested in people, comfortable working in community settings and able to bring your clinical experience into conversations that are practical, approachable and relevant.

Why AMSA?

  • Flexibility that works for life
  • A team that shows up
  • Work that matters

If you're an experienced nurse who enjoys working with people, believes in the value of prevention and would like to use your skills in a community-focused way, we'd love to hear from you. The Australian Men's Shed Association values diversity and encourages applications from people of all genders, backgrounds and lived experiences. Applications close on Friday 13 November.
