We want to recruit the best people to our department. Our roles support flexible work arrangements including the opportunity to work from one of our departmental offices and hybrid (mixture of office and home-based work). These roles are located in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

A merit pool may be formed and used to fill future similar vacancies in these locations and other locations within the same metropolitan area.

We actively seek to reflect the diversity of the Australian community in our workforce. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability and/or who are neurodivergent, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, including people of all genders and gender identities. We uphold gender equality as a core organisational value. If you’re interested in the role but feel uncertain, we still encourage you to apply if you feel your passions, transferable skills and valuable experience align with this position.

The opportunity we have available:

Help shape policies and programs that influence Australia’s aviation sector. The Domestic Aviation and Reform Division is recruiting APS6 officers to work on nationally significant aviation priorities. You will contribute to work that has economic, environmental and community impact, while gaining exposure to senior decision-makers, industry and governments across Australia.

The Domestic Aviation and Reform Division provides policy leadership, regulatory stewardship and program delivery across Australia's domestic aviation sector. The division develops advice for Government, regulates leased federal airports and associated environmental and planning frameworks, administers aviation programs and grants, supports aviation consumer reforms, and works with industry, airports, communities and other governments to maintain a safe, competitive, sustainable and connected aviation system that serves Australia's national interests. We have several opportunities at the APS6 level.

What you will do:

  • Multiple branches across the Domestic Aviation and Reform Division are seeking staff at the APS6 level including the Airport Environment Branch; Domestic Policy & Programs Branch; Airports Branch; and Sydney Airport Slots & Consumer Aviation Reform Branch.
  • The duties across the Branches vary, and the roles are varied and dynamic but typical duties include:
    • Implement programs administered by the division
    • Anticipate risks and provide expert advice to drive practical solutions on more complex areas of policy and regulation
    • Develop and support complex relationships with internal and external stakeholders
    • Develop and apply comprehensive work knowledge, precedent and established legislation, policy, procedures and guidelines to situations involving complexity and sensitivity which require considerable interpretation and analysis.
    • Prepare influential advice, reports, papers, and correspondence for Ministers and senior executives

You do not need to be an aviation specialist to apply. We are looking for capable, curious and collaborative people who can analyse complex issues, communicate clearly and exercise sound judgement. We will support you to build the aviation knowledge needed for the role.

Inherent requirements for the role:

The successful candidates for these positions will be able to demonstrate their capability against the APS6 Work level standards. In addition to the duties outlined in the section above, the inherent requirements for these roles include an ability to:

  • Work with independence, subject to limited direction against established priorities, practices and methodologies to deliver quality outcomes.
  • Research, interpret and apply legislation, including maintaining knowledge of relevant legislation and international conventions.
  • Provide accurate and specialised advice including anticipating problems and contributing to issues management.
  • Anticipate and respond to stakeholder needs and expectations.
  • Assist in strategic planning, program and project management and/or policy development.

All positions require proficiency in Microsoft Office.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts is committed to supporting the employment and career development of people with disability. The RecruitAbility minimum requirements are listed above under ‘inherent requirements for the role’. You will be asked to indicate if you wish to opt into RecruitAbility in the application form. You must tick the 'opt in' box to participate in RecruitAbility. Simply declaring that you have a disability will not automatically include you.
