The Role

The National Resource Coordinator is an APS6 position responsible for coordinating financial, procurement, resource and project management activities across Fleet Support Unit - Australia (FSU-AUST). Reporting to the Deputy Director Resources, the role leads a small, nationally dispersed team, setting priorities, coordinating workflows and establishing consistent national practices. The position works closely with many Defence stakeholders to support Navy operational and sustainment priorities through effective planning, funding allocation and resource management.

Key responsibilities include coordinating the annual budget build, consolidating regional funding requirements, monitoring expenditure and preparing national forecasts, reports and advice. The role oversees financial records, reconciliation and compliance activities, coordinates procurement and provides guidance on financial procedures and governance requirements. The occupant also resolves complex enquiries, identifies emerging risks and opportunities, maintains work instructions and reporting processes, and develops team capability through coaching and knowledge sharing.

About our Team

Fleet Support Unit (FSU) is the home of the Navy's uniformed technical workforce when they are ashore. FSU is a core provider of repair and maintenance services - improving the seaworthiness of the Navy's ships, submarines and other Commonwealth of Australia maritime assets. We work in conjunction with Navy, other Defence Groups, our Allies, and our industry partners to deliver complex maritime maintenance outcomes for the Commonwealth.

In addition to being involved in safeguarding Australia's sovereignty, security and prosperity, you will also have access to competitive working conditions.

As an Australian Public Servant in Defence, you will be supported in balancing work and family priorities and the remuneration package includes a generous superannuation contribution (15.4%).

The FSU team has up to 900 employees at any one time, is comprised of Navy officers, senior sailors, and junior sailors (marine technicians, electronic technicians, and boatswains mates), and is supported by a small team of Australian Public Service staff. The National Resource Coordinator will work from the National Office, on base at HMAS Kuttabul (Potts Point NSW).

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate is a capable and organised leader with experience in resource coordination, financial management or project support within a complex organisation. They will be confident managing budgets, forecasting expenditure, coordinating procurement and translating regional requirements into clear national priorities. They will demonstrate sound judgement, strong analytical skills and the ability to provide practical advice while applying relevant policies and governance requirements.

They will build effective relationships across a geographically dispersed workforce, lead a small team and work independently under broad direction. Strong communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to resolve complex issues and competing priorities are essential.

Experience within Defence or a comparable government environment, together with relevant qualifications in project management, business or finance, would be highly regarded.
