Business Intelligence Specialist (6-Month Contract)

About the opportunity

Our client is a well-established national organisation delivering purpose-driven services across Australia. They are moving from SQL Server to Databricks and using the change to rebuild their reporting the right way, with structured data models, best-practice standards and a single source of truth. This is a chance to shape a modern data platform while it’s being built, in a team where quality matters more than volume.

About the role

Reporting to the BI Manager, you’ll own reporting from end to end, from building the data model to delivering the final dashboard. Your manager leads stakeholder engagement and provides business context, so you can focus on building.

  • Design and build dimensional data models in Databricks that support a single source of truth
  • Develop and maintain Power BI dashboards, reports and DAX measures that track performance against key business targets
  • Write, optimise and maintain SQL to extract and transform data from multiple sources
  • Validate all outputs before release by reconciling against source systems and confirming KPI definitions
  • Provide data, analysis and insight to support operational and strategic decisions
  • Document your work and share Databricks knowledge to help build capability across the team

What they’re looking for

They want a versatile all-rounder who is as comfortable designing the back end as building the front end.

  • Strong data modelling experience, including a solid understanding of dimensional modelling
  • Proven experience building and maintaining Power BI reports, including DAX
  • Strong SQL skills and hands-on Databricks experience
  • Willingness to move between back-end and front-end work as priorities shift
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, and a collaborative, knowledge-sharing approach
  • Experience in a government-funded environment, which is highly regarded

Why this role is worth considering

This role offers real ownership, genuine flexibility and meaningful work.

  • Strong potential for extension or permanency in a growing team
  • Highly flexible hybrid working with minimal office requirement
  • End-to-end ownership of a new Databricks platform, from data model to dashboard
