Assistant Accountant (AP and Financial Operations)

Our Finance team is looking for an Assistant Accountant to take ownership of accounts payable and the daily financial operations that keep a multi-entity financial services business running. It is a hands-on role with real responsibility. The reconciliations, journals and reports you prepare are what management relies on each day, and you will work closely with the Finance Manager and our Operations team. This suits an accountant with a solid grounding in the fundamentals who wants broader exposure than a single-function role offers, from daily transaction processing through to month-end close, intercompany and audit support.

Your responsibilities

  • Reconcile bank, merchant, and other accounts daily, and resolve discrepancies promptly

  • Prepare and post daily client and counterparty journals with supporting documentation

  • Prepare the daily cash flow worksheet and client money reports for management

  • Record commission payments and income, and reconcile them at month-end

  • Manage accounts payable end to end: invoice verification, coding, posting, payment preparation and reconciliation.

  • Work with internal stakeholders and suppliers to make sure invoices are approved and paid accurately and on time

  • Prepare month-end journals, including accruals, prepayments, depreciation, amortisation and foreign currency revaluations

  • Maintain and reconcile the fixed asset registers

  • Process intercompany invoices and monthly billing, coordinate settlements with Operations, and reconcile balances across entities

  • Prepare schedules, reconciliations and supporting documents for the year-end audit

  • Assist other regional entities with accounts receivable and bookkeeping as needed

  • Suggest and implement improvements to accounting processes and reporting

What we are looking for

  • Degree in accounting, finance, or related field

  • At least two years of hands‑on accounting experience

  • Confident with double‑entry bookkeeping, bank reconciliations, accruals, and month‑end process

  • Good Excel skills, including Pivot Tables and lookup functions

  • Clear communicator who works well with suppliers, colleagues and other teams

  • Reliable under tight deadlines, with strong attention to detail

  • Takes ownership and works independently without close supervision

Advantageous but not compulsory

  • CA/CPA qualified, or working towards it

  • Experience in financial services or broking

  • Intercompany accounting experience across multiple entities

  • Xero, SAP or similar accounting software

  • Power Query Skills

We are based in the heart of Sydney CBD, close to Circular Quay station. This is an office‑based role, five days a week.

You will gain experience in an international, multi‑entity business, with room to take on more responsibility as you grow.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
