The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is seeking a doctor to join its aviation medical team as an Aviation Medical Officer within the Client Services Centre Branch. This is an opportunity to use your clinical judgement in a different medical setting, contributing directly to aviation safety through aeromedical assessment, fitness-for-duty evaluation and risk-based medical decision‑making.
Doctors with strong clinical foundations and an interest in aviation medicine, occupational medicine, fitness‑for‑duty assessment or safety‑critical medicine are encouraged to apply. Suitable applicants may come from general practice, hospital medicine, emergency medicine, occupational health, rehabilitation, defence health or other relevant clinical backgrounds.
Working under the supervision and guidance of the Manager – Medical Certification (MMC) and alongside experienced colleagues, you will:
- undertake aviation medical certification assessments for pilots and air traffic controllers
- review clinical information, investigations and specialist reports
- apply aviation medical standards and clinical judgement to fitness‑for‑duty decisions
- contribute to complex case discussions
- liaise with applicants, Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs), treating practitioners and specialists to obtain relevant clinical information
- build expertise in aviation medical certification and regulatory medicine.
Applicants must hold General or Specialist Registration as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA, without conditions that would limit performance of the role. Experience in occupational medicine, fitness‑for‑duty assessment, safety‑critical work or medico‑legal/regulatory reporting would be advantageous but is not essential. Canberra is highly preferred as the work location. The role is available full‑time or part‑time, with a minimum commitment of 0.7 FTE.
