Greencross Vet Hospital (GVH) at the University of Melbourne is a leading multidisciplinary teaching hospital committed to delivering excellence in patient care, education, and innovation.

Our team works at the forefront of veterinary medicine, combining compassion and advanced clinical practice to make a meaningful difference to pets and their families every day.

As part of our growing surgical services team, you’ll join a department known for its teamwork, high standards, and collaborative spirit.

Our hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art surgical theatres, advanced imaging, and anaesthesia technologies, providing the perfect environment to refine your skills and contribute to complex, life-changing procedures.

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Surgery & Anaesthesia Nurse to join our dynamic surgical team.

This exciting role involves working closely with our specialist surgeons, anaesthetists, and theatre nurses to provide gold-standard care before, during, and after surgery.

You’ll play an essential role in maintaining smooth surgical workflows, ensuring patient safety, and delivering exceptional anaesthetic and recovery care.

Every day brings the opportunity to work on diverse surgical cases, expand your knowledge, and contribute to our mission of clinical excellence and teaching.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-level nursing care to patients across the surgical journey — from consultation to pre-operative preparation through to recovery.
  • Assist surgeons and anaesthetists during procedures, ensuring optimal patient safety and efficiency in theatre.
  • Monitor anaesthesia and patient parameters using advanced monitoring equipment, responding proactively to changes.
  • Maintain sterile fields, manage surgical instrumentation, and support theatre set-up and pack-down.
  • Oversee patient recovery, providing attentive post-operative monitoring and comfort care.
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, imaging teams, anaesthetists, and other teams to deliver seamless, multidisciplinary care.
  • Contribute to the education and mentorship of veterinary students during their surgical rotations.
  • Uphold hospital protocols and standards to ensure consistent excellence in patient care.

About You

  • Qualifications: Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (or equivalent) – essential.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years in a surgical, anaesthesia, or specialist hospital setting preferred or GP setting for 3 years.
  • Skills: Strong technical skills including anaesthetic monitoring, sterile technique, surgical preparation, and patient recovery.
  • Attention to Detail: Calm, precise, and confident in high-stakes environments.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Team Player: Positive, reliable, and committed to contributing to a supportive and high-performing surgical team.
  • Growth Mindset: Keen to expand your knowledge through hands-on experience and continuing education opportunities.

What We Offer

  • Competitive remuneration package based on experience.
  • Opportunities for specialist training, professional development, and continuing education.
  • A collaborative and supportive team culture that celebrates shared success.
  • Access to world-class surgical and anaesthetic facilities with advanced technology and resources.
