Do you dream of working in a role where your talent with mechanical system design and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be merged? Do you want to expand your current knowledge of data center systems while providing input from your previous experience? Are you ready to apply your CFD expertise to solve real-world thermal challenges in data center environments? Then keep reading…
In this role you will own the end-to-end CFD modeling strategy for complex data centers — from internal data hall thermal analysis to campus-wide external wind and contaminant dispersion studies. You will independently set up, execute, and interpret CFD simulations for thermal and airflow analysis, delivering accurate results that inform mechanical design decisions within established methodologies and standards. You will manage external CFD consultants and set the benchmark for quality and completeness. As the subject matter expert, you will be an integral part of our work to change the world through technology.
Key job responsibilities
- Performing CFD models on innovative data center designs using established methodologies and approved software tools
- Executing internal CFD studies for data halls and electrical rooms, including steady-state thermal analysis under N unit failure scenarios and N+1 operational conditions at full load
- Performing transient thermal studies to assess IT equipment survivability during concurrent power failure and unit failure events, including time-to-recovery analysis post power restoration
- Generating pressure and velocity profiles to validate mechanical system performance against mechanical design requirements
- Executing external CFD studies encompassing campus mechanical and electrical plant, including adjacent industrial complexes and site obstructions, and performing thermal plume recirculation analysis to understand heat dissipating equipment impact on building and equipment intake temperatures
- Performing air emissions and contaminant dispersion modeling to quantify generator exhaust ingestion into building intakes
- Working with global Mechanical teams to achieve alignment of design and CFD modeling standards
- Supporting external CFD consultants by reviewing model inputs and assumptions for accuracy
- Contributing to process improvements within the team's CFD workflows and documentation practices
- Participating in cross-functional design reviews and providing technical input on thermal and airflow performance
