AIJ Arbitration Centre is seeking qualified and experienced arbitrators to join our growing panel and determine commercial and international disputes through our advanced online arbitration platform. Our technology assists parties in presenting their cases and the Tribunal in analysing evidence and legal issues, identifying gaps and inconsistencies, and preparing proposed findings for the arbitrator’s independent consideration. The arbitrator remains the decision-maker. AIJ combines established principles of arbitration with advanced artificial intelligence and a purpose-built digital case management platform.

The Role

As an AIJ Arbitrator, you will be appointed to commercial and, where suitably qualified, international commercial arbitrations administered by AIJ Arbitration Centre. The engagement is casual and highly flexible. You can accept as few or as many appointments as your availability permits, subject to conflicts, independence and the requirements of each matter. Arbitrations are conducted predominantly on the documents, allowing matters to be managed remotely and efficiently without the scheduling and logistical burden associated with conventional hearings. Through the AIJ platform, arbitrators receive access to a structured electronic case file containing the parties’ submissions, evidence, procedural history and communications, presented through an easy-to-use chronological case timeline.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Making procedural directions and adding procedural steps to the parties’ case timeline where required.
  • Conducting hearings where necessary or appropriate.
  • Reviewing, amending or rejecting AI-generated proposed findings and reasoning, and independently determining the dispute and issuing the final reasoned arbitral award.
  • Complying with the AIJ Arbitration Rules and applicable arbitration legislation.

Who We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from established and emerging arbitration practitioners who can demonstrate appropriate qualifications and experience. Applicants may include:

  • FCIArb or MCIArb members of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
  • Members or accredited practitioners of other recognised Australian or international arbitration organisations.
  • Barristers and solicitors holding an unrestricted Australian practising certificate, with appropriate knowledge of arbitration.

Applicants should have sound knowledge of the Commercial Arbitration Act 2011 (Vic) and/or corresponding Australian State or Territory commercial arbitration legislation and, for international matters, the International Arbitration Act 1974 (Cth) and UNCITRAL Model Law.
