The role involves building and owning work across the whole platform: the patient app, the clinician portal, internal tooling, mobile apps, and the API behind all of them. You will report directly to our CTO and work with a high degree of autonomy. This is a role for an experienced engineer who can take a complex problem, determine what needs to be built, and own it through to production.
You will set your own priorities within your area, lead significant projects end-to-end, and be accountable for their outcomes. Additionally, you will help mentor engineers around you, reviewing and turning ambiguous problems into clearly defined work for the team.
What you’ll do:
- Ship features across the stack: frontend, backend, database, and own the day-to-day delivery of your slice of the work.
- Contribute to large, complex projects alongside the team, taking clear ownership of the pieces that are yours.
- Clarify assumptions and scope upfront; asking the right questions before you build is crucial.
- Help keep production healthy by debugging real patient-facing issues and responding when things break.
- Build a working understanding of how Abby delivers care, so you know why what you’re building matters to patients or clinicians.
Your first six months:
- 1 month: Know our systems and can debug and fix production issues independently.
- 3 months: Own a major project or product area, setting its priorities and shipping independently.
- 6 months: Deliver significant capability that patients and clinicians rely on, becoming a go-to person for technical decisions and helping others get unstuck.
How we build:
- AI-native: AI tools primarily write most of our code. Your leverage is judgment, direction, and review.
- Patients first: The tech comes second to the patient experience; we optimise based on the problem at hand.
- In person: We’re a small team that moves fastest in the same room; this role is Sydney-based and requires regular office attendance.
Our stack: React + TypeScript on the front end, Node.js + Express + PostgreSQL on the back end, AWS infrastructure, and a Swift iOS app. Additional tools include Datadog, Auth0, Stripe, and integrations across the Australian healthcare ecosystem.
What we’re looking for:
- Solid experience shipping production software (roughly 5+ years) with real users on the other side of your code.
- Confidence across the full stack; you should have strengths but be able to take a feature through every layer.
- Ownership of outcomes; you set your own priorities and drive projects end-to-end.
- Business and product judgment; weigh cost, effort, and patient impact, explaining trade-offs clearly to non-engineers.
- Ability to lift others; mentor engineers, provide useful code reviews, and clarify ambiguous problems.
- A reliability mindset; notice when things break, fix them properly, and ensure patients never feel it.
- Comfortable with pace and change; startup experience is a strong plus.
- Sydney-based and keen to work alongside the team in person.
What you get:
- Up to $180k + super, depending on experience.
- ESOP (eligibility from 6 months).
- Real ownership of major projects at a growing healthtech startup, working directly with the founders and CTO.
- A clear path to grow; the scope of what you own expands as fast as you can take it on.
