Grounds Maintenance Officer

A.B. Paterson College seeks an energetic Grounds Maintenance Officer to join our expanding Facilities team in caring for and maintaining our world-class College grounds and facilities.

The Grounds Maintenance Officer plays an important role in maintaining the College’s beautiful campus environment. While supporting a range of maintenance functions, the position has a strong focus on horticulture, grounds care, landscaping and the enhancement of outdoor spaces to ensure the College remains a safe, welcoming and well-presented environment for students, staff and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

1. Grounds Maintenance: Maintain and enhance the College’s grounds, gardens, sports fields and landscaped areas through high-quality horticultural practices, while supporting general maintenance activities to ensure a safe, clean and well-presented campus environment.
2. Safety and Compliance: Maintain a safe working environment by following workplace health and safety requirements, adhering to safe operating procedures, and promptly identifying and reporting hazards, incidents and maintenance issues.
3. College Operations and Events: Support the successful operation of the College by preparing and maintaining outdoor spaces for events and daily activities, responding to changing operational needs, assisting with severe weather recovery, and working collaboratively with the Facilities team and other stakeholders.
4. Other Duties: Contribute to the safe and effective operation of the College through traffic management, garden development, operation of grounds maintenance equipment and machinery, minor construction and repair works, sourcing of materials and equipment, and other duties as directed by management.

Please note: The role will involve working outside of standard hours from time to time. This work will be remunerated appropriately, and the incumbent will be required to be available for such work as required.

What We’re Looking For:

• Certificate II in Horticulture or Parks and Gardens
• Experience in grounds maintenance, including mowing, hedging, brush cutting and garden maintenance
• Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment such as zero-turn mowers, tractors and other plant safely and effectively
• Strong knowledge of horticultural practices and maintaining lawns, gardens and landscaped areas
• Experience with sports field maintenance and irrigation systems will be highly regarded.
• Relevant machinery operation competencies, chemical application training and/or First Aid qualifications are advantageous
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities and contribute positively as part of a team
• A proactive, reliable and practical approach, with strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining high presentation standards
• Commitment to workplace health and safety, with the ability to identify hazards and take ownership of routine maintenance tasks
• Basic computer skills and the ability to accurately record work completed and report maintenance issues
• Willingness to undertake training and perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions
• Experience in a school, commercial property or large-site environment will be highly regarded
• CurrentCPR and First Aid training, or willingness to obtain
• Current Blue Card, Working with Children Check, or willingness to obtain
